Oneapproachbasesitselfuponthefactthatanyconceptwhichhasasignificantunknownaspectcanbeapproachedthroughantinomies--thepresentationoftwosideswhichappeartobeoppositionwitheachother.Whenonedefinesthephenomenonofwisdomsolelybymeasurable,earthlystandardsonlyonepoleisused--thematerialpoleandtheotherdimension--thespirtualpole,orwhatwemightcallthe"itsunknowndimension"thatispresentinanywiseactionwhetheritbeinwordordeed--isignored.Whileaone-sideddefinitionmayworkinsomesituation,inothersitdistortstherealityofthesituation.Itisthis"unknowndimension"ofwisdom,whatwemightalsocallitsintrovertedside,thatIwishtoemphasizenow.

Thequestforbalancedwisdomisanelusivething,muchlikegoingtowardadestinationtowhichoneneverarrives.Insteadofthismakingoneimpatient,Iencourageyoutoconsiderthatallnoblethingsaredifficult,costly,andtime-consuming.Furthermore,unliketheusualtripswetakeinlife,wisdomspathoftendivertsusfromourconsciousintention;wefindourselvesinunknownanddisorientingplaces.Thesetwoaspectsofthepursuitofwisdomareperceivedintuitivelyasthetensionbetweenknowingthatthepathleadstogreaterconnectednessandincreaseyetatthesametimedeconstructionandlackofdefiniteness.Withoutthisuncomfortableness,inherentinitspursuit,wisdomcannotbemanifested,remainingdead,orperhapsinert.
Thepursuitofwisdomis,inpart,abattleoftheheartinwhichthepursuitofpleasureandlesseningofdiscomfort,pain,orobligationcontinuallypullusawayfromengagingitsunknownpole.TheScripture,"outoftheheartflowstheissuesoflife,"justtouchesthedepthsofsuchaconfrontation.Concretely,the"issueoflife"isbloodwithoutwhichtherecanbenofurtherlifeoronlyalifethatisstagnant.Iencourageyoutomakethepursuitofwisdomasprecioustoyouasyourownbloodandthebloodofothers.
