FECT THE COGNITIVE ABILITIES OF RURAL MIDDLEAGED AND ELDERLY PEOPLE?
ABSTRACT
Global climate change has intensified, and the frequency and intensity of extreme weather such as high temperatures have also increased significantly. High temperatures can significantly affect human health, which in turn may reduce human capital. Based on China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study data, this paper explores the impacts of high temperature on cognitive abilities of rural middleaged and elderly people. Different from the previous research focusing on youth groups, this study found that high temperature has a significant negative effect on the cognitive ability of rural middleaged and elderly people. The study found that for every 1 ° C increase in HSDD, the cognitive ability of rural middleaged and elderly people will decrease by 1%. At the same time, the effect of high temperature also has a significant 3day lag effect. In addition, heterogeneity analysis shows that rural women who aged between 40 and 60 are more sensitive to the high temperature. This paper can help confirm the true damage of high temperature to the cognition of rural middleaged and elderly people. On the other hand, under the current situation of extreme high temperature in the context of climate change, it can provide the government with scientific evidence to take positive measures to deal with climate change and improve the health of middleaged and elderly people.
