Dear _,In a world that is continually growing and evolving and problems such as
global warming and population growth becoming ever more real, the need for
innovation and fresh ideas from the engineering world becomes increasingly
evident. It is this that attracts me to civil engineering as a career because
although I am aware of the many pressures and demands I would be facing, the
sense of achievement and the knowledge that I would be making a difference to
the lives of others would be of great personal reward to me!My fascination for engineering started when I was young, and has only
increased since then. I enjoyed playing video and computer games that required
planning and strategy. I watched ???Extreme Engineering??? when it first aired
on the Discovery channel and today I have seen every episode up to season five
and am waiting to see the sixth season. I have a game called ???West Point
Bridge designer??? that has taught me about the different properties of each
type of bridge and allows me to experiment with different bridge designs as well
as using different materials in the most cost effective way possible.Unfortunately for my parents, this fascination extended into reverse
engineering as well and ranged from my toys as a child to unused household items
and broken cars and motorcycles as an adolescent. This interest was then
nurtured during my schooling and college years - at school learning about the
history of art and how the smallest engineering discoveries led to the biggest
architectural breakthroughs, for instance the impact that the arch, concrete and
the dome had on Ancient Roman and proceeding architecture. In college I
thoroughly enjoyed mathematics and physics particularly in the applied sections,
and although my grades do not reflect this, a big portion of my gap year has
already been spent on preparation towards of their improvement.As well as a lot of revision, my gap year so far has been a wealth of new

most direct way you can. These personal statements are very good example of
this, in just a few lines I have to get my message of why I want do a degree in
Journalism across to my prospective universities. That is one of the reasons why
I love to write, the challenge of putting over a complex thought or concept to a
large audience of people and convey it in such a way everybody will understand
it. As the great writer Hemingway once said, “My aim is to put down on paper
what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way.”My own personal experience of journalism started young, my dad used to
write for a magazine and take me with him when he went to interview people,
since then I have been fascinated with the industry. When I was 14 I was lucky
enough to get a work experience placement at “News International” in Wapping. I
got to work on the websites of “FiredUp.com”, “Revolver.com” and “Page3.com” as
well as have a tour of the offices of “The Sun”, “News Of The World” and “The
Times”, I have also recently been offered a day’s work experience at my local
paper and I am currently waiting for news of work experience at the BBC.I pride myself on being well organised and thorough in my research. I have
also developed many skills such as interview techniques and being able to see
things from another perspective, a skill I have acquired through Sociology and
Communication Studies, analytical skills through Film Studies and Media Studies
and I have learnt about analysing and collating numerical data and factual
evidence in Psychology. Although I have already completed three A-Levels and two
AS Levels, I have taken a year out to study AS French, Sociology and Spanish. I
did this in order to improve my grades and to give me a wider choice of
qualifications as my previous subjects are all very similar with their syllabus
as well the fact multiple languages would be an invaluable

Dear _,My four-year research experience since the completion of my undergraduate
program in _ has helped me to develop from a Bachelor in Engineering to a Master
in Science. My research activities cover a wide range of fields including
analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, organic catalysis, environmental
science, instrumental analysis, nano-analytical chemistry, and biological
analytical chemistry. I am proud to say that I have accomplished achievements in
almost every of those fields. Based on my research findings, I have published a
dozen research papers. In particular, I have received patents from the Patent
Office of China for two major research results "The Preparation Method of a
Solid Acid Catalyst with High Selectivity and Activity for Esterification" and
"A New Reaction Technology and the Equipment for Gas Phase Esterification". Both
of them have significant value in industrial application.Nevertheless, I am acutely aware that, in the research fields I am
interested in, there are still so many difficult subjects and challenges
awaiting for solution. In physical chemistry, China is relatively backward in
the fields of catalyst development, catalyst inactivation, reaction dynamics,
reaction mechanism, geochemical reaction mechanism, environmental-chemical
reaction mechanism. In analytical chemistry, China lags relatively behind its
Western counterparts in areas such as instrumental analysis and theoretical
analytical chemistry. Basically, China relies on import for large-scale
analytical instruments. By contrast, the United States has many world-leading
academic specialists and encourages interdisciplinary programs. It will accord
me a stimulating and liberal academic environment, apart from the sophisticated
research facilities. Rice University is my top priority in applying for a Ph.D.
program and I choose to specialize in physical chemistry or in analytical
chemistry.At Rice University, I plan to learn broader-based fondational theories in
my chosen fields. With my solid interdisciplinary knowledge and my ability for

status to directly start my laboratory research under the guidance of my future

Dear _,Creative activities have always drawn my attention, from a young age I
would draw, colour, cut and create! I’m still very much like this, I find myself
losing track of time and working into the small hours. I enjoy the challenges
which design presents and communicating my ideas as solutions.Being involved in
extreme sports when I was younger helped to feed my creative cravings, it gave
me a focus and allowed me to express myself freely. I wanted to represent these
hobbies, that’s when I decided to design t-shirts that would display a
connection with my friends and our common interests.Prior to applying to study illustration, I have worked in job roles where I
have learnt valuable skills. The majority of my experience being within the
retail industry. I have learnt the values of team work, meeting deadlines, being
pro active and working to ones own iniative. Working for high fashion retailers
has also allowed me to keep my creative edge. I have personally made displays,
dressed windows and mannequins, remerchandised walls, even down to placing
fixtures requires industry knowledge and creativeness. It was at this point I
realised I would really enjoy working within a more creative industry.In my free time I enjoy playing guitar, writing music, discovering new
bands, attending gigs, reading, photography, watching films and playing chess. A
big desire of mine is to travel, I believe it is an important part of life. I
know the places I have visited so far have left an impression on me, I am always
keen to discover and explore. Without visiting new places and meeting different
people, I would not have as much awareness of the world, I view this as an
essential part of design. I also consider design to be a hobby which I am
passionate about and enjoy thoroughly. It seems natural for me to take this to
the next level as I see design being more than just a hobby.Studying at degree level will give me the opportunity to respond to briefs,
rather than self-iitiating my work. Though more importantly I will also be
given the opportunity to work with other designers, be it my tutors or fellow
students. Working in a creative atmosphere amongst others who are able to give
critique and advice, will be the most valuable area to me. I would also like to
use university as a stepping-stone to gain work, through exhibitions,
opportunities within the university and through industry links.Some of my favourite artists would include David Shrigley for his bazaar
humour, Banksy for his satire and directness and Frank Sheppard Fairey for his
‘phenomenology’ experiment.Illustration has recently become a bit of an obsession to me and I can’t
remember a day when I wasn’t drawing or doodling an idea. There’s something
satisfying about spending hours rendering an idea, only to realise something is
