1 Introduction
Globalization makes the distance around the world much closer than before, which requires the communication between countries more convenient and effective. During the past fifty years, with the development of South Korea’s politics and economy, an increasing number of Korean people have been learning and using English, kinds of problems come along with the trend. In the process of foreign language learning and using, Korean are used to migrate the knowledge of the native language to the target language (English), to form a kind of intermediary language between mother tongue and target language which is called “Korean English”. In essence, Korean English is one kind of English, but learners and users are always affected by their mother tongue. The emergence of Korean English, affected South Korean's foreign communication and publicity, hindered the Korean English users to improve their English. Therefore, how to overcome Korean English so as to improve the accuracy and standardization of the English language is indeed a big question. Since there aren’t so many studies on Korean English, this research will be significant, which will provide reference for the future Korean English research. At the same time, through the analysis of the error in Korean college students’ English peer–peer interaction, this research can help Korean college students to improve the accuracy of oral English and to improve the level of English education at the university of South Korea.
By adopting the error analysis method, subject-verb errors in the interaction among college students will be analyzed and the present study attempts to find out the answers to the following questions:
(1)What are the typical subject-verb errors always be made by Korean English learners in spoken English?
(2)What about the frequencies of these errors?
(3)What is the reason for the existence of these errors?
(4)What teaching enlightenment can we get from subject-verb errors?
2 Theoretical Background
The proposal of the concept "World English" and the structure of theoretical framework first appeared in the early 1960s, but the research on its specific form and function was late to 1978. In 1980, the British linguist Peter Strevens proposed his first tree diagram about the World English, believe that English come from Britain, and then spread all over the world. In 1985, the United States, a linguistics professor Carter Road proposed his so-called "three concentric circles" model, the spread of English around the world is divided into inner circle, outer circle and extended circle. According to the "three concentric circles", United Kingdom and the United States are two of inner circle countries, some countries such as India and Malaysia, they are in the outer circle. Extended circle has the maximum countries and largest population, such as China, Japan, South Korea.According to this model, we can know that the English globalization is a process of gradually expand from the inner circle to the outer circle. In the colonial period, the inner circle countries was forced outer circle countries to accept the language and economic system from them, South Korea is not an exception. For the extended circle countries, just like South Korea, English is a foreign language, the national English ability was acquired by the long school education, English is also used in science and technology, education, industry, trade and diplomacy. English in South Korea has been using for a long time, it gradually formed a certain pragmatic variation —— Korean English.
After the mid-1960s, an elite group in Korean society with higher education and knowledge of English appeared. After staging of international athletic events in Korea such as the Asian Games in 1986 and the Olympic Games in 1988, an urgent need to learn and speak English came from the public. A desire to attain the identity of “modern”, “sophisticated”, “assertive” and “educated” person that came with the ability to speak English. Korean English is an objectively existence. When South Korean are writing or speaking in English, there are many special things need to express. Should be clear: Korean English is different from Konglish. In terms of pronunciation, Konglish is affected by the Korean pronunciation, so compared with the standard English pronunciation, the discrepancy between them is large; In terms of vocabulary, Konglish is influenced by the thinking mode of Korean, thus it coming about some difficulties to understand new words and sentences.
E.g.①Skinship —— Making out, kissing, touching
E.g.②Meeting —— Blind date
E.g.③Sick —— Hurt or broken
(e.g.“I slept 8 times last night”...“I slept for 8 hours last night”)
E.g.④Let’s Dutch pay! —— Let’s go Dutch!
E.g.⑤So-so —— Boring, uninteresting
(e.g.“It was very, very so-so”...“It was very, very boring”)
E.g.⑥Pop song —— Any song in English
E.g.⑦Cunning —— Cheating, Copying work
(e.g.“Teacher, John is cunning!”... “Teacher, John is cheating/copying!”)
In terms of pragmatics, Konglish mostly not suitable for the cultural background of English, so it may lead to communication barriers, contradiction and conflict. According to explanations of the Korean English scholars, we can regard Korean English as: it is based on standard English, through transliteration, semantic regeneration etc, using creative means to convey South Korea's unique culture, things or ideas. It is a variant of English with South Korea characteristics. After many years’ development, we have found and realized the differences between Koinglish and Korean English, therefore we come to the conclusion that Korean English is based on standard English and developed with characteristic of South Korea's a form of the English language. Just like: Kimchi, Soju, Bibimbap... The emergence of the concept "Korean English" also proves that the Korean English, as a variant of English, it is a kind of objective existence.
